What Do We Know and Why? Creating a Knowledge Infrastructure for Post-Conflict State Transformation

An important part of the project is to establish a database of younger scholars who are doing the field research and analysis in such countries and on issues of post-conflict reconstruction and state-building and yet who are unlikely to have established regular relationships with those in the policy world. People in the policy and operational worlds are seeking expertise but do not always know where to find it. We hope as well to use this database to create a network among scholars concerned with these issues, which will eventually also benefit the academic world.

We are currently seeking to expand the database. If you would like to be included or know of other young scholars working in this field, please email your information to . We welcome any inquiries, comments or corrections.

The database can be searched and browsed below. Scholars' e-mail addresses and webpages can be found by clicking on their names.

By searching “Research Topic,” you can find scholars by searching the research interests that scholars have provided themselves. If you are looking for scholars researching very specific topics, this is the best field to search.

By searching under “Policy Topic,” you can find scholars whose expertise falls under the following broad categories of post-conflict reconstruction research:
1. Security Sector Reform (includes DDRRR, addressing spoilers and residual dynamics of war, and mine action)
2. Civil Society (includes research on incorporating women, local networks, social capital, and traditional social structures in post-conflict reconstruction)
3. Government Institutions (includes research on domestic service provision, justice systems, capacity building, public administration, civil service and combating corruption)
4. Democratization (includes research on constitutions, elections, party formation, and media development)
5. Transitional Justice and Reconciliation (includes research on legal, psychological and social approaches)
6. United Nations (includes research on internal dynamics of missions, UN administration, UN agencies, and international governance)
7. Human Rights (includes research on international law, domestic law, and advocacy)
8. Donors (includes research on the relationship of international donors (such as the World Bank and IMF) and domestic actors, conditionality, “ownership,” coordination and evaluation)
9. INGOs (includes research on the activities of specific INGOs, internal aspects of INGO administration and coordination between INGOs)
10. Diplomacy and Peace Negotiations
11. Economic Development and Political Economy (includes research on trade, finance, microeconomics, land reform, environmental issues, and rebuilding physical infrastructure)
12. Conflict Prevention and Theories of Conflict
13. Humanitarian Relief (includes research on providing emergency medical and food aid in conflict and post-conflict environments)
